On Sunday Gilbert Hughes, Charles Pummill and Mark McDonald all tested. It seems like everyone was preparing to all test at once, which in many ways is true since when one member tests we all test. Everyone just keeps getting better. Gilbert Hughes tested for Rokyu and even though he has only trained for a short time, he clearly showed a good understanding of aikido principles during his test. Great job Gilbert!! Charles tested for Yonkyu. Charles has attended two summer camps as well as two other seminars since his last test and all of the hard work really showed during his test. Charles has clearly raised his aikido to another level. His randori was a joy to watch. Way to go Charles, the training is really paying off!! Mark McDonald tested for Sankyu. Mark has also been training consistently and it showed during test. He has gained a new understanding of where he wants his aikido to go and this was evident during his test. His movement has improved greatly and he constantly looks for the proper connection. Way to go Mark and keep up the good work!! It was a very successful day of testing followed of course by our group meal, where we went to Fuddruckers for burgers and celebration. Thanks to everyone for their participation in the kyu tests and especially to all the senior students who worked so diligently to assist these candidates in test preparation. On Sunday November 5th, we had four tests, which included three rokyu tests and one nikyu test. Stephen Hughes, Colin Knox and Marty Herzog all tested for rokyu. A lot of preparation went into these tests and it showed. As each test candidate has improved a great deal while preparing for this test. All of them knew the required techniques and many more that were included in their test. In addition, they each displayed a good understanding of connection and basic aikido principles. Way to go Stephen, Colin and Marty!! Pamela survived the nikyu test while handling all techniques like she had been doing them all her life. She moved with purpose and connection and never appeared to be in hurry. She performed the kumi tachi like a pro and then had one of the most enjoyable randoris that we have seen. Her use of the mat, while remaining calm was awesome. She kept all of the ukes spread in a manner that made it look easy. Way to go Pamela on an awesome test! |

Last weekend Charles, Chad and I traveled to Boulder, Colorado for the annual Halloween Seminar with Saotome Sensei. This year the seminar seemed less crowded than those I have experienced in the previous years. This may simply be from training on a smaller mat space and then feeling less crowded on the larger mat in Boulder, as there were about 100 aikidoka present at this year’s seminar. Saotome Sensei worked on the important parts of establishing aiki from various attacks. This happened primarily from entering mentally first, owning the space prior to uke getting there. It was interesting to see how much this seminar paralleled what we had learned from George Ledyard Sensei just a few weeks earlier. It was incredible practice to work on these essential elements with the many aikidoka at the Halloween seminar. We also got to work on punching and kicking, which was exhilarating and a lot of fun. |
