We recently completed our 8th annual seminar with Sunny Skys Sensei and I think this year was the best one yet. It always amazes me how easily Sunny Sensei brings real life experience into Aikido and our approach to training. This year’s focus was on changes within ourselves and how we tend to spend too much time focusing on our partners and what we think they should be doing, instead of focusing on things we actually can control ie, our own movement and responses. We practiced maintaining our own sense of self and posture through a variety of exercises. The purpose of the exercises was to not think about a technique but to create a new way of experiencing connection. We did this through a variety of attacks and it was always easy to fall back into what we know. The closer the exercise resembled a technique the harder it was not to just start doing what we already knew. It is easy for us to get caught up in mental fears of what others think or what we think others think about us. This fear drives us to try to make something happen when it would be better to allow interactions to develop and see where they lead us. In many cases these things resolve themselves if we simply remain true to ourselves. I walked away from the seminar with a new way of examining my training. It was an exciting weekend and a very enjoyable seminar. Thanks to Sunny Sensei for coming to Austin and sharing his life and Aikido with us. Many thank to everyone who came and supported this wonderful seminar weekend. We look forward to next year! |

On Sunday David Huffaker tested for Nikyu. This is hard for me to imagine because it seems like he just started training. However, David has been diligently training for the past two and a half years and has learned a lot about Aikido along the way. It was a typical summer test as the dojo was hot and humid. David got plenty tired during the test, but never gave in until the test was finished. With 30 minutes of continuous movement under very warm conditions throughout the test itself as well as 60 minutes during the class before. David did a great job from the beginning with all of the required movement from suwari waza. Then he moved on to hanmi handachi and tachi waza, showing a lot of improvement in his understanding in both techniques and aiki. His kumi tachi also went very well and his randori showed a great use of the mat, keeping the ukes spaced nicely. Way to go David on a really great test! Following the test, we all went to Pei Wei for dinner. The food and conversation, along with the chance to hang out were all very enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who participated and supported David on his test. Check out the pictures |

This year’s Aiki Week left me feeling pretty tired by the end of this exciting week. We trained pretty hard, with plenty of great energy in each of the classes. Not being quite as young as I once was, increasing my training days seems to take its toll on my body. However, the effort was well worth it, with each of us showing improvement with the additional training during the week. We covered many topics that we do not usually get to work on, including jo wasa, randori, and two sword training. The variety and extra days of training were a lot of fun while breaking our usual routines. The energy on the mat was outstanding adding to the excitement. Thanks to everyone who participated in making this a memorable Aiki Week. Check out the pictures |
