I just returned home from a week in DC studying weapons training with Saotome Sensei and Ikeda Sensei. The ASU Summer Camp was well attended and it was fun to see familiar faces, some I have not seen for a few years. Sensei talked a lot on the final day asking us to make sure to remain humble in our training and always see ourselves as students of aikido. Sometimes we as teachers or senior students can easily find ourselves feeling like we have accomplished all there is in aikido and cheat ourselves of future growth in the art. Saotome Sensei says he himself is still a student. It has always been my goal to remain open and continue to learn. Attending seminars is one way of keeping the ideas flowing. It is also a humbling experience to train with so many talented aikidoka. The camp left quite an impression on me personally and where we are going with our own training as a group. I look forward to sharing my new ideas with you in the future. See you on the mat as it is time to get training! |
